This map illustrates a series of overlays of ongoing ocean surveys carried out in the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem. The surveys displayed include government, academic and other research nonprofit organizations which comprise the Pacific Coast Ocean Observing System (PaCOOS) Board of Governors. The distributions of most U.S. managed species of fishes and marine mammals extend into Canadian and Mexican waters. Canadian and Mexican governments have observing systems that track the abundance of many of the same species, and monitor the dynamics of the portion of the California Current in their waters. Observations collected consist of hydrographic and biological surveys aboard oceanographic research vessels and including physical variables, as well as phytoplankton, zooplankton, and pelagic fish observations.
